Teaching Digital Citizenship

Consider using literature to teach your students about digital citizenship and you will be tackling comprehension, critical thinking, Internet safety, and digital citizenship at one time. Students can connect to the lesson better when it is presented in a story, too.  I listened to Jenny Voorhees and Angela Smith from the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. present their model at ISTE.  You can access their Prezi and research plan on their Wiki along with a list of recommended books. Look for opportunities in the stories you read to discuss some of these digital citizenship topics:
  • Internet Privacy
  • E-mail Etiquette
  • Protecting Your Passwords
  • Recognizing false or biased information
  • Cyberbullying
  • Copyright
  • Plaigiarism
