Teaching Students to use Creative Commons Licenses

How do you teach students to be responsible when they use other people's work they find online?  Do you teach them how to protect their own creations that they or you post online?  The Creative Commons site is a great resource for teaching these important skills to your students.

Start with teaching them about the different levels of licenses.  Then, show them how to mark their work with creative licenses.  Getting into the practice of thinking about their own creative processes and when and how they want others to use their work will put them in a better frame of mind for thinking about using other people's work.

Next, teach them how to search for and attribute work based on the creator's creative commons license.  Then, make sure you are modeling it by doing this in your work.  Students will notice and begin making better choices that show they know the importance of intellectual property and digital citizenship.
