Lowe's Toolbox for Education provided the funding for the diner booths, signs, tabletop jukeboxes (that play iPods or iPads), and a Wifi access point (coming soon). Daniel Aycock, from Lowe's, was a tremendous help along the way. He even personally delivered the neon diner sign hanging above the booths the day before the opening.
This was truly a team effort. The idea for the diner came from Chrissie Willett, 2nd grade teacher, who saw something similar at another school during the Blue Ribbon Schools conference last year. Putting ours together, I had the help of talented WGS artists and crafters, including Patrick Duggan, Mickey Johnson, Nancy Brooks, and Lisa Campbell. The booths came from A Moment in Time Retro Design, who graciously agreed to accept our school's P.O. even though it's not their normal policy.
It was such a thrill to see our retirees back for the grand opening. Even students I saw in town over the weekend were talking about how great it was to see Ms. Maness, our retired principal who led WGS to excellence every year, Mrs. Kilpatrick, our retired Kindergarten Queen, and Ms. Carr, the world's best librarian and all around inspiring, fun person.
